If “freedom is a state of mind”, how do we get there?

When you move to a new country, what do you miss the most?

Your friends?

Family?

Work colleagues?

Food?

all of the above perhaps…

When you move to another country, first you go through this euphoria phase, where everything is new and novel. You are all excited and pumped up with adrenaline. You power through a lot of things, renting your home, finding a job, and settling in your new place.

Slowly, that excitement wears out and leaves its place to a strange feeling.

An icky one. Sadness mixed with confusion.

What is it?

It…

Here is a question for you.

How many years did you have to go through formal training, education, or apprenticeship for your current job or role? How many years did it take you to become a professional in your job?

Five?

Ten maybe?

How many tests/exams did you had to take? How many interviews did you have to pass?

A lot, right?

Think about driving.

Can you just wake up one day and decide that you will buy a car and start driving?

Of course not! (Are you out of your mind, Kumsal??)

When you decide to buy a car…

Are you looking for yours too?

“Expectations are resentments waiting to happen”. Well said.

Another great wisdom from Brene Brown hits home today.

My expectations come back at me,

all the time.

And ouch… they hurt.

What are expectations?

Expectations are hopes, wishes from ourselves, or from another person, or from life itself that,

something will happen the way you envision it,

someone behaving the way you hope them to be,

something happening at a particular time,

something that you hoped to achieve at a certain time

The fact is that life doesn’t work that way. I mean, we can’t control life.

I know this. Damn…

Itsy bitsy spider climbs up the water spout. This time, would she be able to reach the top?

If you have a child, especially a toddler, I know you are a master of nursery rhymes, too.

Little Bo Beep, who lost her sheep way too many times to count…. and doesn’t know where to find them… (here goes the sheep AWOL again…)

And ten little buses; 1 little, 2 little, 3 little buses, 4 little, 5 little, 6 little buses, 7 little, 8 little, 9 little buses, 10 little buses. …

Welcome to Immigrant Chronicles — here is a practical post based on my experience with helpful information on how to immigrate to Canada

As a new immigrant in Canada, I would like to share important information about Canada’s immigration system and my journey so far, hoping that it will be useful for fellow immigrants starting out their journey and considering Canada to become their permanent home.

Today I hit the submit button of my application for grad school.

You may think, “Well, congrats Kumsal. Good luck!” and “what’s the big deal?! what is so extraordinary about this?”

The big deal is that I decided to apply for a Master’s of Social Work, after a Ph.D. in Cell biology and 5-years long postdoctoral training. Leaving a career behind at the age of 32.

I might have gotten your attention now and maybe got you thinking “Wow, what took you so long, Kumsal to figure this thing out?” “ Why now?” …

November 7,2020 — This could the best day of 2020.

Let me explain why.

On November 3rd, I too watched the US election like the rest of the world anxiously, holding my breath so to speak. As an immigrant living in this country for the past 5 years, I have experienced what it means to be a “foreigner, visitor, immigrant” in the US and watched the harsh (at times ruthless) immigration policies unravel, wide-eyed.

The syntax might differ to the context or how people see things, but I define myself as an “immigrant scientist”. Because immigration as much as it…
